This summer I stayed at the Old Colony Inn – Alexandria, VA. I had a pleasant stay (which didn’t really start well after a bad discovery in my room) but it was a convenient hotel for my trip to old town Alexandria and DC.
The hotel is located in old town Alexandria. It’s a safe area and King Street is about 20 minutes by foot.
A free shuttle service is always convenient. The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service to King Street, Washington Reagan National Airport and the nearby metro station Braddock road (five stops away from DC). The shuttle service is free but you have to call them to pick you up (and that’s where the cost comes in). Two drivers. One of them was really friendly and very talkative.
The room (two double beds)
First things first, this hotel looks a bit old but the room was clean. I stayed here in the middle of summer, in the middle of a heatwave. The first thing I needed to find (besides airconditioning) was a fridge… but there was no fridge in my room. A few moments later, I found out there was all hair on my bathroom floor and in the bath. I have to admit, I was disgusted when I saw this. I went to the receptionist and he was a bit shocked. He insisted to clean my bathroom himself, even when I said it wasn’t his job, and that’s exactly what he did. A couple days later… The soap holder, at the side of the bath, broke off. Like I said, the hotel is a bit old and things like this should be fixed. The bedsheets and pillows were clean. No complaints here.
Continental breakfast. It was simple but good. Bread, eggs, sometimes bacon or sausages, cereals, yogurt and waffles. However, until the last morning, there was no choice in jam. You had grape jelly but nothing else.
During my stay, I saw four different employees. Three women and one man. The man was really friendly and always willing to help. They will order a yellow cab to the airport, in case you need one, and they have a safe where you can leave your stuff.
This hotel is perfect for a short stay due to its ideal location. The shuttle service is convenient but it’s just as easy to get there by car. The room was overall clean and that’s the most important thing but don’t expect too much luxury. Something to keep in mind: I was staying at the top floor (ground level, first floor, second floor) and there was no elevator. I wouldn’t recommend this for older people and for the ladies: make sure you have a man by your side.
